What are the different fares and conditions?

It’s incredibly complex to remember the numerous fares and conditions offered by each transport operator. So we have created a full list of fares available on Rome2rio to help you understand your options.

National Rail (UK Rail)

Advance
You must book these fares in advance, and they are sold in limited numbers. These tickets are non-refundable and non-amendable.

Off-Peak Single
This ticket allows you to travel on any off-peak train service on the date shown on the ticket. Time restrictions vary by route and operator. Amendments and cancellations are permitted with a fee of £10 per ticket.

Off-Peak Return
You can travel on any off-peak train service. For the outward journey, this must be on the date shown on the ticket and for the return journey within one calendar month. Time restrictions vary by route and operator. Amendments and cancellations are permitted with a fee of £10 per ticket.

Off-Peak Day Single / Off-Peak Day Return
The outward and return journey must be made on the same date as shown on the ticket but on any off-peak train. Amendments and cancellations are permitted with a fee of £10 per ticket.

Super Off-Peak tickets
Some operators offer these fares for the quietest travel times. You can travel on any super off-peak train on the date shown on the ticket. Time restrictions vary by route and operator. Amendments and cancellations are permitted with a fee of £10 per ticket.

Anytime Day Single / Anytime Day Return
Fully flexible with no time restrictions, but tickets must be used on the date shown on your ticket and up to 04:29 the following morning. Amendments and cancellations are permitted with a fee of £10 per ticket.

Anytime Single
These tickets are fully flexible with no time restrictions, but tickets must be used within 2 days of the date shown on your ticket and up to 04:29 after the last day of validity. Amendments and cancellations are permitted with a fee of £10 per ticket.

Anytime Return
These tickets are fully flexible with no time restrictions. The outward journey must be made within 5 days of the date shown on the ticket and up until 04:29 the following morning. The return portion must be used within one calendar month and up to 04:29 after the last day of validity. Amendments and cancellations are permitted with a fee of £10 per ticket.


Amtrak (USA Rail)

Rome2rio displays the cheapest Amtrak fare available in each travel class at the time you make your reservation.

Saver
Class of service: Reserved Coach, Acela Business Class
Saver Fares are non-refundable but can be cancelled with the ticket value stored as a credit to be used directly with Amtrak for future travel.

Value
Class of service: Unreserved Coach, Reserved Coach, Acela Business Class
Value Fares for Reserved Coach and Acela Business Class can be fully refunded at least 8 days prior to departure, or they incur a 25% refund fee within 7 days of departure. Unreserved tickets incur a 25% refund fee at all times. Alternatively, the full ticket value can be stored as a credit to be used directly with Amtrak for future travel.

Flexible
Class of service: Unreserved Coach, Reserved Coach, Acela Business Class
Flexible Fares are 100% refundable before departure.

Business
Class of service: Non-Acela Business Class
Business Fares are fully refundable prior to departure.

Premium
Class of service: Acela First Class
Premium Fares travelling in Acela First Class are fully refundable prior to departure.

Class of service: Sleeper Accommodations
Premium Fares for Sleeper Accommodations incur a 25% refund fee if cancelled 15 or more days prior departure. No refunds are available if cancelled less than 15 days prior to departure. Alternatively, the full ticket value can be stored as a credit to be used directly with Amtrak for future travel.


Renfe (Spain Rail)

All Renfe fares currently offer the ability to cancel without penalty within 24 hours of the booking being made (any booking fee is non-refundable). More than 24 hours after booking, the following conditions apply:

Promo
Promo fares are the least expensive fares. They are non-refundable and non-amendable.

Promo Plus (Promo+)
Promo+ tickets are discounted fares that can be cancelled before departure with a 30% fee. After departure, changes and cancellations are not permitted.

Leisure Return (Ida y Vuelta)
The full return journey can be cancelled with a 15% fee. Partial cancellations are not possible. After departure, changes and cancellations are not permitted.

Flexi (Flexible)
Flexi fares are ideal for passengers who may need to change their travel plans. These tickets can be cancelled before departure with a small 5% fee for adult tickets and a 15% fee for child tickets. After departure, changes and cancellations are not permitted.

Tourista Avant
Tourista Avant tickets are discounted fares that can be cancelled 3 days before the departure date for an 85% refund. Thereafter, changes and cancellations are not permitted.


Trenitalia (Italy Rail)

High-Speed Trains (InterCity and Le Frecce)

Super Economy
Super Economy fares are the cheapest fares and are non-refundable and non-amendable. These tickets are only available to purchase in advance (at least 2 days prior departure), and are subject to limited availability.

Economy
Economy fares are non-refundable. However, they permit one date or time change, which can only be made at a Trenitalia station before departure by upgrading to a Base fare and paying the fare difference. The route or the category of the train cannot be amended.

Base
Base fares are full-price fares and tickets over €10 per person can be cancelled before departure with a 20% fee. They can also be exchanged before departure, subject to any price difference between the new and the old ticket. If you have just missed your train, this fare permits one change at the departure station ticket office up to one hour after departure.

Regional Trains

Ordinary (Ordinaria)
Ordinary fares are valid for the date and time purchased and may be valid up to 4 hours later (please check the small print on your e-ticket for the exact validity). One date/time change can be made at least one day before departure subject to a fee. The route or category of train cannot be amended. Tickets over €10 per person can be refunded with a 20% fee, with the exception of Airport to City express services, which are non-refundable (such as the Leonardo Express in Rome and the Malpensa Express in Milan).


National Express (UK Coach/Bus)

Rome2rio currently offers one National Express ticket type: Standard Fares. These fares offer excellent value but are non-amendable and non-refundable. We plan to introduce additional ticket types later in the year.


VIA Rail (Canada Rail)

All VIA Rail fares currently offer the ability to cancel without penalty within 24 hours of the booking being made (any booking fee is non-refundable). More than 24 hours after booking, the following conditions apply:

Escape
These are the cheapest and most restrictive fares. They are non-refundable, but you can make changes with a 50% fee (minimum CAD$20) plus any fare difference.

Economy
Economy fares are semi-flexible. Changes and cancellations incur fees of 25% of the fare (minimum CAD$20) plus any additional fare if you’re changing to a more expensive fare. After departure, changes and cancellations are not permitted.

Economy Plus
These are fully flexible fares and can be fully refunded before departure. After departure, changes and cancellations are not permitted.

Business
Business fares are semi-flexible. Changes and cancellations incur fees of 25% of the fare (minimum CAD$20) plus any additional fare if you’re changing to a more expensive fare. After departure, changes and cancellations are not permitted.

Business Plus
These are fully flexible fares and can be fully refunded before departure. After departure, changes and cancellations are not permitted.


Deutsche Bahn (German Rail)

Super Saver Fare (Super Sparpreis)
These are the least-expensive and most restrictive fares. They are non-refundable and non-amendable.

Saver Fare (Sparpreis)
These fares are semi-flexible and can be refunded at least one day before the first day of validity with a cancellation fee of 10€. Refunds will be issued in the form of a Deutsche Bahn voucher. Thereafter, they are strictly non-refundable and non-amendable. If you have booked a return ticket, the first day of validity refers to the date of your outbound journey.

Flexible Fare (Flexpreis)
Long-distance trains (ICE, IC/EC, IC Bus):
Fully refundable before the first day of validity. On or after the first day of validity, changes and refunds are subject to a fee of 19€.

Regional and local trains (IRE, RE, RB, S-Bahn):
Fully refundable before the first day of validity. On or after the first day of validity, changes and refunds are subject to a fee of 17.50€.


SNCF (French Rail)

Book Early (Prem’s)
Book Early fares are the most cost-effective tickets available. They are able to cancelled and refunded subject to a penalty based upon the route and notice provided before the departure date.

Book Early Group (Pack Tribu)
This is a special offer for groups of 4 to 7 passengers travelling on TGV and Intercités trains. This offer includes one free ticket but must be purchased well in advance due to limited availability. They cannot be changed or refunded.

Leisure (Loisir)
Leisure tickets are the most common fare. They can be fully refunded up to 33 days before departure. If the departure date is more than 3 business days away refunds are subjected to a fee of €5 up. On the day before and the day of departure, this fee increases to 50% of the ticket value (maximum of €15 for TGV travel and €12 for Intercités trains). Tickets are strictly not exchangeable or refundable after departure.

Leisure Le Mont St Michel (Le Train Du Mont St Michel)
This fare is available on the train journey between Paris and Mont Saint Michel. Exchanges and refunds are available free of charge until the day before departure. Thereafter, it is subject to a fee of 50% (up to 12€ per ticket) when done before the hour of departure. These tickets are non-exchangeable and non-refundable after departure.

Flexi (Pro)
These full price tickets offer flexibility and can be purchased up to and including the day of travel. These tickets can be cancelled up to 3 days before the departure date for a full a refund. They can also be changed up to 3 days before the departure of the train, but only at the train station.  If there are less than 3 days to departure these tickets become strictly non-refundable and non-amendable.


SNCF TER (Regional France)

All SNCF TER tickets are non-refundable and non-amendable.


Eurostar

Standard
Standard fares are the least-expensive ticket, and therefore non-refundable. However, they are exchangeable before departure, subject to a fixed fee of €40 per person per segment, plus any difference in price.

Standard Premier
Standard Premier fares offer more comfort and a light meal served at your seat. They are non-refundable, however, they can be exchanged before departure, subject to a fixed fee of €50 per person per segment, plus any difference in price.

Business Premier
Designed for business travellers, they are full price tickets offering maximum comfort and flexibility. They are fully refundable up to 60 days after departure.


Thalys

Book Early (Standard Mini)
They are the cheapest fares, non-refundable and non-exchangeable. They have to be booked at least 2 days in advance but are not available on all Thalys routes.

Leisure (Standard/Comfort)
Leisure tickets are the most common fare and are 50% refundable before departure (with a minimum fee of €15). You can also exchange this ticket once directly at any Thalys train station before departure with a fee of 15€ per ticket plus any difference between the new and the old ticket.

Premium Flexi (Premium)
Full price tickets that allow you the most flexibility. Fully refundable before departure, then 50% refundable up to 60 days after departure.


Lyria

Book Early
These are the cheapest fares, which are non-refundable and non-exchangeable.

Leisure
Leisure tickets are the most common fare and can be exchanged and refunded before departure for a €30 fee per ticket.

Flexi
Flexi tickets are 100% refundable before train departure, and exchangeable at the departure station in France up to 1 hour after departure for a fee.

Business Premier
Business Premier tickets offer the most comfort and flexibility. They are 100% refundable before departure.


Renfe-SNCF

Promo-Duo
This is a promotional fare for two people travelling together (only available during promotional periods set by the operator). These tickets are strictly non-exchangeable and non-refundable.

Leisure (Essential)
Leisure tickets are the most common fare. They are refundable and exchangeable before departure with a 50% penalty fee.

Flexi
These full price tickets offer more flexibility. 100% refundable up to 48 hours before departure. Changes and refunds within 48 hours will incur a 10% fee. After departure, they become non-refundable and non-amendable.


DB-SNCF

Book Early (Prem’s)
They are the cheapest fares, non-refundable and non-exchangeable, with a 7-day advance purchase requirement.

Leisure (Loisir)
Leisure tickets are the most common fare, and advance purchase is recommended. 50% refundable before departure or they can be exchanged at an SNCF station for 15€ per ticket plus any difference between the new and the old ticket. After departure, exchanges and refunds are not possible.

Flexi
These full price tickets are 100% refundable up to 3 days before departure. If you have to cancel within 3 days, you will incur a 10% penalty fee. Exchanges are possible before departure at an SNCF station subject to any price difference between the new and old ticket. You can also exchange this ticket up to two hours after departure only at the train departure station in France.


ALSA

Flexible
Flexible fares are full priced tickets which are able to be fully refunded minus the booking fee as long as the departure time is more than 48 hours into the future. Once the departure date is between 24-48 hours into the future this ticket can be cancelled for a 10% cancellation fee. If the departure date is between 2-24 hours into the future this ticket can be cancelled for a 20% cancellation fee. If there is less than 2 hours before the departure date this ticket becomes strictly non-refundable and non-amendable.

Minimum and Reduced
Minimum and Reduced fares are the most cost-effective tickets that ALSA sell. They are non-refundable and non-amendable.


Greyhound USA

Economy
These advance-purchase fares are non-refundable but can be amended before the departure date with a fee of USD20 per ticket.

Economy Extra
Economy Extra fares are non-refundable but can be amended before the departure date with a fee of USD20 per ticket. However, you can reschedule your ticket on the same day for free by visiting a Greyhound station counter. Allow yourself extra time to find an agent to reissue your ticket.

Flexible
These tickets can be exchanged for free and are fully refundable before the departure date.  You can reschedule your ticket on the same day for free by visiting a Greyhound station counter. Allow yourself extra time to find an agent to reissue your ticket.
